1. Meaning
A portmanteau of jjam (짬) and vibe(바이브), shortened from the phrase "vibe that comes from jjam."
It is a neologism used to describe the ease and seasoned confidence that comes from long experience or seniority.
2. Origin
The word combines jjam (짬) and the first syllable of vibe (바, ba). While jjam originally means free time or a spare moment, it is also a well-known slang term in Korea referring to the time spent in mandatory military service.
Jjambap (짬밥), literally meaning military mess hall food, is commonly shortened to jjam. Over time, jjam came to represent the length of one's military service — measured by how many mess hall meals one had eaten — and eventually spread into everyday language as a word for accumulated experience in any field.
